CQWW – How was it for you?
That’s the CQWW SSB contest finished for another year.
Band condx i think surprised everyone. My abiding memory is hearing and working east coast US on 40m at 12:00z on the Saturday - quite incredible for this part of the world! All 59+ too!
Lots of contacts into the Caribbean, Africa on 10m, condx really were super. One thing missing from the contest this year was Pacific and west coast US stations – propagation just never stretched that far….still, there’s always next year..

Hi Colin,
Only a listener this Year but superb conditions even through the QRM!
Good to hear 10m so open, VO1MP, C52C, FY1FL (58!), FY5KE, KB1H and others!.
Sporadic E signals on 10 also.
Hope to be participating again next year in both the RTTY and SSB contests.
Keep up the good work on the website!!..

10 meters was great! Brazil, Caribbean and some US stations (west coast). 20 meters was hard work. Too many stations with bad operators (distorted audio and creating lots of splatter). Even a 1.8 KHz filter didn’t help much anymore.

Hi there
There were openings to the Pacific area on 15m on Saturday morning. Worked AH2R, heard also CC0Y but the was too weak as for my limited setup. I was surprised with great openings towards HC8N, worked them on 40/20/15 – just missed on 10 (but heard them there, too). Generally, Saturday conds were surprising. I worked T6EE at 4:30 UTC – what a surprise! Ans my final conclusion is that there are so few stations that keep on calling CQ between contests…
Cheers!

I pretty much heard nothing but South America from my FN24 QTH, predominately Brazil on 10-meters. Fifteen meters was VERY busy here all weekend as well.

Although I’m not a big participant in contests, I find these events to be a great tool for determining antenna performance.
This year I erected my first real 160m antenna and decided to give it tryout on CQ WW. The results were interesting to say the least. My biggest highlights for this band were The Gambia, Morocco, and Pitcairn Island. I was absolutely blown away!
I also decided to check the higher bands and found 15m was wide open to just about everywhere. 42 different DXCC entities in a little under 7 hours of time spent on 15m, and that included a couple of 15-20 minute breaks. If I had been on the band when it opened in the morning, it’s possible I could have gotten DXCC in one day.
CQ WW: Two Thumbs Up!

As I’m still in the process of putting my station together, a serious effort at CQ WW just wasn’t going to happen. However, I was able to test my antennas and work at least a few Qs on each band.
My full writeup is here:

I can’t wait for a real test (maybe CQWW CW).

I can only imagine 10m being open to anywhere! The DX conditions from Edmonton, Alberta Canada this weekend were absolutely dreadful. And this was at a super contesting station with seven towers, stacks, real power, etc. We didn’t make a single QSO on 10m all weekend! One time I heard a station in Chile, but by the time I adjusted the amp, he was gone. Not having heard anything on 15m for many months, I was surprised to hear it open to the U.S., Latin and South America. We also worked a few stations in Oceania. 20m was similar to 15m and Europe/Asia were nowhere to be found! We did ok on 40m, but still mostly Americans. 80m was dead the first night and only barely alive the second. I managed to make a grand total of 13 QSOs on 160m, even with a dipole at 150′! As poor as the conditions were, our team, doing a Multi two/HP, still managed about 3300 QSOs. Too bad we had so few multipliers (total of about 1.75 million points). This is why nobody comes to northern Alberta to do contesting!

MW5W Team
This was our first attempt at a Multi Multi Entry from the West Coast of Wales as MW5W, a fantastic experience with varied conditions. The bands that performed for us were 10m 811 Qs 15m 1201 Qs, 40m 1294 Qs. with a score of around 4 million points.
Bring on next year!!! 73 de Tim M3SDE
