KH4 – Midway Atoll

Russ, WQ3X alerted me to a very interesting snippet of news regarding Midway Atoll. The full story can be found here.
Reading the article, it’s very apparent in about six months time, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plans to allow tourists to visit Midway, primarily to clear the island of debris.
Below are some quotes which might whet the appetite of an intrepid DXer or DX group.
Authorities plan to allow the first tourists sometime between November and January, most likely in groups of 15 on a chartered plane from Honolulu. No more than 40 overnight visitors would be allowed.
A weeklong stay would cost one person about $3,600, including airfare from Honolulu and lodging in old military barracks.
Tourists won’t be able to go water skiing or kite-surfing, although authorities will allow less disruptive activities including swimming and snorkeling. There’s no shopping aside from a small gift store.
The refuge would also welcome up to three cruise ships per year, perhaps those making the rounds of World War II battlefields in the Pacific.
I’d say there is definitely scope for some sort of Dxpedition to take place eventually on KH4 – providing you help clear the island of some debris/garbage!
Thanks Russ for the info.
I wonder when the next KH4 will be on air then?!

FWS is really very restrictive and the big problem will be “approved use” . Last group that tried was told that it would cost them $5,000 fee to get approval and an hourly fee. If its not wildlife connected approvals are or were hard to get.The news article makes it sound like its covered in trash but its not. Always some beach washup though. You might check on the Kure DX pedition a year or so ago as they worked something out. That is State owned though while midway is Federaly owned. You can get a lot of info from our website at http://www.midwayisland.com Some of our group went over for the June 4th Battle of midway memorial service and brought back current pictures. FWS was given Amateur radio equipment to keep for public use in the old Military MARS/Amateur radio station facility but last we had heard they had scattered it out and were using for other uses.Right now it looks like they will keep you limited on what you can do and expect that you will be bored and volunteer to pull their non native weeds. I spent 3 years on midway when it was KM6 (military rec station KM6BI ) John D
