The callsigns 1B1CDE and 1B1AB were recently on air from North Cyprus. It’s not a recognised country by the UN or any other country in the world, except Turkey.

I’d like to discuss a few additional issues in respect to some of the information already provided. Firstly the DXCC list itself is a political list; just look at the principal requirements for DXCC status; UN recognition, ITU call-sign series or inclusion in (a) the U.S. Department of State’s list of “Dependencies and Areas of Special Sovereignty” as having a local “Administrative Center,” or (b) the United Nations list of “Non-Self-Governing Territories. Now what constitutes inclusion on the State Department’s List, as TRNC would seem to qualify? – the politics and foreign policy of a powerful, important and sovereign nation.
Now lets look at this “illegal” call-sign prefix 1B. The ITU Radio Regulations (Article 19 and Appendix 42) do not provide for any call-sign which starts with the figure 0 or 1 or where a single letter followed by a figure forms the national identifier; in this case the second character is never 0 or 1. There is therefore a clear problem for 1B BUT now lets consider some call-signs which we know and love, which are also a problem but no one raises even a whisper of concern about them. 1A – a DXCC entity listed as an unofficial call-sign in the DXCC list – note in this case the word ‘illegal’ or ‘unauthorised’ call-sign is not used. Then there is S0 another disputed territory but not as disputed as TRNC; again it is not using a call-sign series conforming to the Radio Regulations of the ITU. S0 is also listed as an unofficial call-sign in the DXCC list. So are some of us not being just a little hypocritical when complaining about the use of 1B by TRNC as an illegal call-sign?
In terms of problems of recognition TRNC has similar problems to Kosovo, Palestine, Taiwan and Western Sahara. In amateur circles we’ve already seen stirrings of discontent with the disputed (by some) independence of Kosovo in recent times. However in the case of TRNC, no one can dispute that the United Nations Security Council issued two resolutions (541 and 550) proclaiming that the Turkish Cypriot declaration of independence was illegal and requested that no other sovereign state should recognise the legality of the declaration and asked for its withdrawal.
So once we get into the world of politics and human relations things get blurred. Let us accept there are always international political problems in the World, whether its the politicisation of Antartica, who owns the Falklands/Malvinas, whether Macedonia should have a new name or whether the British Isles should be called the Western European Isles.
I for one wish the 1B licensees well – I understand that they are operating under difficult conditions but they are operating in accordance with the regulations of the State in which they live. I do not think that any person living in any of the disputed territories around the World should be denied the fun and enjoyment of operating an amateur radio station. I also understand the deep rooted problems between the two Cypriot communities but these need to be solved in an appropriate way through negotiation, NOT by invoking emotive statements in amateur radio news groups and email lists.
I take exception to a note that I posted on a QRZ.com forum appearing here as response on this web-site to a ‘map’. Whilst I stand by what I have said in the above text I believe that you should have clearly stated the source of the text. I do not wish it to appear that I am being controversial whenever the subject of the TRNC is raised. 73s Dave
Soyer 1B1AB has posted the above under his own callsign. I’m assuming by posting “FROM EI3IO,G3SDL” at the top of his comment, Soyer thought this would be ok.
I would like to know from Dave which entity authorized his ham radio operations and released the callsign 1B1AB.
I suppose there are other ham radio operators in northern Cyprus and i wonder why they are not using 1B1 prefix.
Briefly, the question is: is any ham radio operator in northern Cyprus allowed to get a recognized 5B4 callsign or the 1B1 callsign is the only way to get a permission to operate from local authorities?
And a last question: why so many people is calling you a USD collector?
Now there is definitely confusion! Franco, I do NOT hold the call 1B1AB or any other call assigned by the administration of the territory known by some as the TRNC. The only time I have operated from the island of Cyprus, I used the call 5B/G3SDL. I believe Soyer, 1B1AB answers the question that Franco has asked on his QRZ.com entry.
And now I would like to ask Demetrius some questions. How can anyone operate from the territory known by some as the TRNC with a 5B or ZC4 call if they are not authorised to do so by the actual and de facto administration of that territory? Surely you would not condone non-compliance with the regulations of the State in which you live? Further, do you hold similar views on the subject of Western Sahara, which also uses an unauthorised prefix S0 and which Greece and every other EU Member State and most of the western World does not recognise? See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_status_of_Western_Sahara.
I personally do not want to deny the HOBBY we call ham or amateur radio to the residents of any territory on our planet or Universe!
As a part time resident of the TRNC and being a radio ham wishing to be able to go on air in all of Cyprus I would like to remind the community of a couple of things:
1. There is no question that Cyprus is one and only one single entity to be; all efforts to come to an agreement between the parties concerned has my full support.
2. The Greek and Greek speaking Cypriots may please not forget that is was not without wrong doing on their side after the independence from the UK, that Turkish troops invaded the North; Mr. Makarios and the EOKA B have done everything possible to provoke such intervention (on a side note: dissidents amongst the Greek speaking Cypriots were equally badly treated, even murdered by their fellow Greek speaking neighbours.).
3. It has been largely the effort of liberal political forces in the North and the pressure of the EU that at least the Green Line has become more open to people from both sides. It was the Turkish speaking Cypriot administration that has changed the historical view point in their school books with regards to a better relationshio with their southern neighbours. The south is still struggling to abandon their schoolbook views of the dirty, lying and betraying Turkish Cypriot neighbours.
4. It was also the Northern people who have voted overwhelmingly for unification. The Greek Cypriot side voted against it at the same ratio.
5. Above all, on both sides many families still are denied knowledge about the whereabouts of their loved ones who are missing since 1974(!!!!). Almost every other country with recent conflicts has managed to organise some form of reconciliation based on mourning for the lost together and helping the families to bury their sons, husbands and fathers. Here I don’t understand what the two sides are hoping to gain from ongoing secrecy about this most important issue!!!
6. Knowing all of the above, it becomes so un-important what call signs are being used, as long as the style of operation is up to amateur radio standards. We are arguing about what and what not is a legal callsign, while one of the oldest conflicts of the so-called civilised world remains unresolved.
With kind regards from the beautiful island of All-Cyprus,
SOYER IS A PIRATE HE IS THE ONLY ONE WHO TOOK FROM HES HUT THE CALL 1B
WHO BELONGS TO MALTA..
US WE KNOW WELL TURKS ARE INVATORS IN CYPRUS ISLAND THE LASTS 30 YEARS
THEY HAVE TOOK THE GOLDEN OPORTUNITY WHO GREEKS COLONELS HAVE GIVE
TO THEM AND THEY HAVE OCUPATE 39%OF ISLAND KICKING AWAY THE GREEK CYPRIOTS
THAT IS ETHNIC CLINISED AREA
THAT GAME WE CANT RESPECT BECAUSE THIS LAND AND THE PROPERTIES IN NORTHERN CYPRUS BELONGS TO GR.C MAINLY
WHOW INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY AND SPECIALLY EU CAN RECORNISE
US STATE A PLACE WITCH 85%OF LANDS PROPERTIES HAVE BELONG TO GREEK CYPRIOTS I DONT SEE ANY MORAL POINT SO TURK CYPRIOTS HAMS APLY
FOR HAM CALL TO NICOSIA AND YOU GONNA GET A LEGAL CALL UNTIL THEN
U R UNLEGAL MR SOYA AND YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE WHO IS ACTIVE IN N CYPRUS
THAT GENERATES A BIG QUESTION ABOUT UR LEGALITY AND YOUR MORAL
Now, dear Mr. John Thiner, if that is your real name. That is a lot of bullshit you’re writing there: May I invite over to Rizokarpaso, where many Greek Cypriot families live, where there are two Greek Cypriot schools (co-operating with their neighbouring Turkish schools), and where the only way for me to talk to my Greek Cypriot neighbours is by translation into Greek by native Turkish speakers who have made the effort to learn their fellow citizens’ language.
I guess, you will not take my invitation, as propaganda in the south maintains that our water is being poisoned, and Greek Cypriots get beaten up. If you believe that you believe anything…
Do you think that there is any ham spirit in 1B1CDE, CIVIL DEFENSE via amateur radio?
Pay attention on the noun D E F E N S E, and NOT PROTECTION.
You must look further and beyond the surface.
Soyer is very polite and nice guy, but he could wait for Internationaly recognition of his territory.
Till then if he is impatient he could take exams in the official and Internationally recognised country of Cyprus by UN, ITU, IARU and get a 5B prefix and not transmit on ham QRGs making all the others accomplice in illegacy.
In his place are hundreds of people who like ham radio, but they live in an area/country not recognised by IARU.
Imagine what would happen if everybody of them use a unique prefix, for eg Ahpazia, Oscetia, Kourdhistan, Thibet etc.
Ham radoi is a hobby, is social service BUT NOT a political propaganda TOOL.
All of us must help these people BUT not allow them poison our fortune the “ham spirit”.
Please Soyer, get a liesence from a valid country (G, TA, 5B whatever you like) and I will support you in any way I can, but DO NOT be the BAD expample to others in similar situation (not regognised country).
Dear radioamateurs, and Dave EI3IO, G3SDL or who has information how to obtain a license to work with the territory of Northern Cyprus to someone from the impurity of the authorities, I must refer planning to visit Cyprus in December 2009 to May 2010 will be very grateful. With regards to the legality of the issue I believe that radio is out of politics and strife and mutual pritenzii only worsen the situation (s2005 to 2008 I lived in South Cyprus, and is familiar with the problem not by hearsay)
Dear Victor, amateur radio license can be obtain from Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Telecommunications Administration, for any additional information you can use fax number 0090 3922281111 hope it helps.

“It??s not a recognised country by the UN or any other country in the world, except Turkey.”
It’s obvious the ignorance from 99.9% of countries and of course UN.
Evrey civilised country disagree with violence and force military occupation.
Till the recognition of UN and especially IARU, anyone from Cyprus wants to operate in ham QRGs , should use the only and legal prefix 5B4 or ZC…
